Over 82 million tonnes of textile is wasted every year, a number that is expected to increase to more than 134 million tonnes by 2030 due to growing fast-fashion and mass-consumerism. In 2015, less than 1% of used clothing was recycled.
While most fashion systems are currently part of a linear economic model, namely a "take-make-use-waste" system, R4 aspires to reflect the principles of a circular economic model.
